Collaborative writing has been proved to ease the anxiety of some individuals when confronted with a blank piece of paper and has been described as 'the key to unlocking the silences of children'.
Developed in Partnership with Ros Wilson
The 2007 Revised Literacy Strategy contains a whole Strand dedicated to promoting 'Group Discussion and Interaction'. MyLO's CWZ stimulates communication and negotiation skills at all levels within this Strand.
ENCOURAGES CLASS DISCUSSIONS
The MyLO Collaborative Writing Zone aims to provide a secure and fun environment for the creative delivery of all genres of writing. All forms of narrative can be composed in this way, but there are opportunities for writing explanations, recounts [journalistic writing], instructions and persuasive texts.
This format is also the perfect opportunity for groups of boys to write about shared hobbies and interests.
When completed, writing containing both text and supporting images can be published and will then be available for review by all class members from a member school.

SUGGESTED STORY ENDINGS STRATEGY
Children often struggle to find endings for their stories, so here is another strategy for small groups to develop the beginning and middle of stories from an ending provided for them. This activity is essentially about discussion, so encourage an exchange of ideas plus note taking, if required.
The endings are deliberately designed to require a fairly complex plot to explain all
the conclusions. Groups will create a story that covers most of the elements of the ending but will often struggle with at least one. Adults can then help them to introduce a sub-plot in true 'soap opera' style.
STUDENTS WORKING IN SMALL GROUPS
Collaborative writing projects can be completed on-line, by up-to 3 students, with one completing the first part, a second writing the middle and a third student writing the end, or conclusion.
Writing projects can also be added, which allow the same student to complete all 3 sections of a story.
Within MyLO, all members can select their on-line appearance, in the form of our MyLO Mees.
