Party Games

Pass the Parcel
…is an old favourite, but there are many variations. It's now traditional that, when the music stops, only one layer of paper may be removed - but a small prize appears between every layer.
If your party visitors are confident enough, you can put little challenges or forfeits between each layer, instead. Make sure that all the children invited can handle all the challenges.
A] Animal noises - a piece of coloured paper with an animal name - child has to imitate the animal - and then receives a reward for a good attempt.
B] Quiz - place a simple question, on coloured paper, between layers - use themes that are currently popular with the age group - films, TV, collectors stuff etc. - or you can use simple sums if you think your guests will like that?
C] Challenges - spell your first name backwards; 5 press-ups; hop 10 times; pat your head and rub your tummy; double your age etc…

Musical Chairs
… is another old favourite. Place two rows of chairs, back to back, in the middle of the room. Children sit down [one to each chair] until the music starts. Children get up and walk around the chairs clockwise. One chair is removed [2 or more if it's a very large group] and when the music stops, the children attempt to sit. [Don't allow more than one on a chair.] One [or more] will have nowhere to sit and is out. Restart the music, the circling begins again and more chairs are removed. The winner is the person sitting on the last remaining chair.
If you are short of chairs, you can play this game with A4 pieces of paper [or bits of newspaper] - spread them on the floor [one less than the number of players] and when the music stops, each child stands on the nearest piece of paper.
Yet another version of this game is 'Musical Statues'. Children dance to the music and 'freeze' into statues when it stops. Adult points out first person to move and they are out. Music starts again and the process is repeated until only one 'statue' is left - that person is the winner.

Bridges
… is a 'tag' game. One person is 'on' and has to tag the others [a light tap on the arm]. Once tagged, a person has to stand perfectly still, arms folded and legs wide apart. Children can rescue their friends by crawling 'under the bridge' [through their legs]. Rescued children can rejoin the game.
The winner can be any [or all] of the following: the last child able to move; or the child who rescues most friends; or, if the game is to be timed, the 'tagger' can win if s/he catches everyone within the target time.

Chain Tag
…is another tag game. When the person who is 'it' tags someone, they link arms and become a single 'it'. Every child tagged joins the chain. When the chain gets longer, all the children in it have to cooperate to trap those remaining! The winner is the last child to be caught.

City Run
Each child chooses a slip of paper with the name of a city [you can use football teams, bands or any other list the guests will like]. Place a complete list in clear view.
One child is 'it' - all the others sit [or stand] in a circle around the person who is 'it'. [In a smaller room, a straight line facing 'it' will do.]
To begin - the person in the middle calls out two city names. The children with those city names have to change places before 'it' can get to one of the empty chairs/spaces. Whichever of the 3 children is left without a place - becomes 'it' for the next round.
If you want a winner - you can ask all the children to place their city names in a hat at the end of the time allowed - and the last person who is 'it' draws a winner.

Stepping Stones
…is a race game. You need a starting line and a finishing line - the children are asked to imagine that there's a river between the two. Each child has 2 pieces of A4 paper. When the game begins each child puts one of his/her pieces of paper into the 'river' and steps onto it with one foot. S/he then puts the other piece of paper in front and steps onto that with the other foot. Now they have nowhere to go unless they lift up the back foot and, balancing carefully, remove that piece of paper and place it in front to make the next stepping stone. First one across is the winner. Anyone who steps into the 'river' is out.
